70027 1962-09 Paddington

The third of Cardiff Canton's initial allocation of Britannias 70027 Rising Star is running tender first with its fireman or driver looking for a clear road as they back out from Paddington after arrival from South Wales, heading not for Old Oak Common but more likely waiting to cross all the running lines into Ranelagh Yard just a short run out from the terminus on the departure side of the tracks. Locomotives coming up to Paddington from Cardiff, Bristol and Wolverhampton could be turned, watered and checked over by their crews at Ranelagh before running back to their respective homes on a return working later that same day as, all being well, they should still have sufficient coal to get them home. Canton crews liked their five Britannias, and the Running Foremen at that establishment rostered them to Top Link Workings betwen Cardiff and London, the engines putting in some fine performances on the tightly timed and heavily loaded workings. Canton's allocation of Britannias had increased to no less than fifteen by early 1957 when its original five were joined by the ten others, displaced from Laira and Old Oak Common by the diesels.
