70018 1957c Swindon
Look at the reaction of those local spotters as 70018 Flying Dutchman, its chime whistle sounding comes hammering through Swindon, photographed masterfully from a carriage window, as it heads the Red Dragon towards the Capital. Allocated initially from new to Old Oak Common and used in its early years on the Wolverhampton and South Wales lines but more frequently rostered on Westcountry duties the engine was one of the ten members of the class reallocated to Cardiff Canton at the end1956, joining that shed's existing five Britannias. Their days at Canton were destined to be their final ones as Western Region engines as subsequent transfers to March in Cambridgeshire and thereafter to the London Midland Region saw them on duties far removed from their earlier glory days as portrayed in this fine picture.
