70018 1960-04 Dover Road Slough

70018 1960-04 Dover Road Slough

Flying Dutchman's fireman is determined to get himself into the picture as they head past Slough on what I think is the Cardiff bound Red Dragon, working home from Paddington following their earlier arrival from South Wales that same morning. Initially allocated from new to Old Oak Common, 70018 was one of the ten of its class transferred to Cardiff Canton at the end1956 in what was a major change in the deployment of the Western Region's allocation of that class, resulting in Canton then having no less than fifteen Britannias on their books. A difficulty which very soon arose at Canton from this wholesale transfer, however, was that the majority of those engines were due major overhauls, and in June of the following year there were six of Canton's newly acquired Britannias all undergoing overhaul at Swindon. 1960 was to be the final full year for 70018 and its sisters at Cardiff, all fifteen members of the class there eventually going to Midland Region Depots by September1961.
