70050 1950s Beattock

70050 1950s Beattock

BR Britannia 4-6-2 No 70050 Firth of Clyde climbs Beattock with a down express c1957.

Peter Kerslake says "The first of the Scottish 'Britannias' 70050 'Firth of Clyde' was delivered newly built in August of 194 to Glasgow's Polmadie depot from where it worked down usually just as far as Carlisle, the class not being especially well favoured by the Scottish Region crews, just used as and when required to cover when a Stanier Pacific was not available.
In this view 70050 looks uncared for apart from its front end which indicates a possible recent spell in Crewe works.
Remaining at Polmadie until April of 1962 the engine moved to nearby Corkerhill in April of 1962 but departed the Scottish Region in the October of that year, finding home at Crewe North and later housed at Holyhead and Banbury before being condemned from Carlisle Kingmoor in December of 1967."
