70053 1965-07-17 Gloucester

Moray Firth puts on steam as it approaches Tuffley Junction with a Saturday Special bound for the west at 12.15pm. The use of 'Britannias' had started on 12th June, taking over from 'Castles'. 70053 Moray Firth was one of a few of its class temporarily reallocated to Birmingham's Oxley shed in order to work the Saturday Summer Specials down to Bristol Temple Meads and back during 1965 as by then the few Castle class locomotives still in use the previous year, apart from Clun Castle, had all been withdrawn. In this view on Saturday, 17th. July, 1965 Moray Firth accelerates a down such working along the Gloucester avoiding line towards Bristol, the third such Saturday Special that morning, and it will return later this same evening from Temple Meads, again bypassing Gloucester on this same avoiding line. This location was known to local enthusiasts as Double Bridges, and the line down to the former Midland Region station at Gloucester Eastgate is seen on the left. The Gloucester avoiding line is today the only line in operation here, the two bridges are still there but there is no track down into Gloucester at this location, no Eastgate station and the whole area is buried in overgrown vegatation to the extent that the two bridges are virtually invisible !
