70026 1955-07-08 Paddington
This was the actual engine on the ill fated Excursion from South Wales to Paddington on the 20th. of November of the year of this view which, running late and having been diverted via Gloucester and Sapperton bank by engineering work, was derailed and overturned at Milton, near Didcot. Eleven were killed, and it was this smoke deflector handrail seen here which was considered to be a contributing factor of the derailment. The subsequent enquiry took the view that 70026's driver's forward vision may have been impaired by the handrail, resulting in his missing an adverse signal and derailing at speed at a permanent way restriction. As a result many of the class had these handrails removed, to be replaced by hand holes cut into the deflectors
