71000 1955-04-24 Swindon Works

Peter Kerslake says "71000 spent time at Swindon to try to resolve the indifferent steaming problems from which the locomotive suffered whilst working on the LMR. as Swindon, with its static test plant had experience in double chimneys, improved draughting and the like under the authority of Sam Ell, their expert in those fields. 71000 has been fitted with the indicator shelter within which engineers would ride whilst the locomotive was being tested on the main line and which provided them with protection whilst they stood and monitored the various instruments fitted for such running test purposes. It must have been rather an uncomfortable ride, but at least they had two windows fitted! Sadly, the tests conducted at Swindon did not really solve the steaming problems of 71000;that would have to wait for many years following its preservation".
