The photographer Peter Kerslake recalls the day "Luck was with me this day on a visit to Crewe from my relatives and a holiday at Leigh from my home in Plymouth. The light was perfect and The Duke has been brought to a stand just by that splendid footbridge at the northern end of Crewe station. Arriving at just past 4p.m. with the down Mid Day Scot, the 1.30p.m. from Euston, 71000 appears to be having some trouble uncoupling from its train, and the two Traction inspectors shown in my earlier view have now joined the group watching attempts to uncouple, whilst one of the other inspectors is talking to 71000's driver. The Naval chap is still visible, and two additional school boys study the Caprotti valve gear, one with NHS spectacles and satchel . The train was eventually worked forward by 46236 City of Bradford, complete with the through coach from Plymouth to Glasgow which was added here, the longest through coach working at this time."
