6139 1950s Birmingham Moor Street

6139 1950s Birmingham Moor Street

61xx 2-6-2T No.6139 passing Moor Street in the mid-1950s with empty stock, the first vehicle of which is a turn of the century GWR 'Toplight' composite still in wartime brown, followed by more modern ex-GWR and British Railways coaches. No.6139 was one of six of this class transferred to Tyseley to replace ten 82xxx Class 3 2-6-2Ts in 1953 and stayed there until November 1959 when it moved back to more familiar territory at Oxford. Note in the background one of the two wagon hoists used to take goods wagons down to the street level depot, a suburban train in Moor Street station and the goods shed beyond. The train is about to pass over the LNWR approaches to New Street, with the deep cutting walls visible in the foreground of this unusual view, before plunging into the tunnel through to Snow Hill station.

Ed Purcell adds -
"This was possibly the best place in central Birmingham for seeing trains. There was a yard on the left from where you could see the GW and LMS lines but it was not a comfortable view!"
