4176 1960-04-12 Dainton

4176 1960-04-12 Dainton

It may be only 25 wagons but it still needs a banker up Dainton Bank.

Peter Kerslake says "Shedded at Newton Abbot for a number of years past their 4176 is banking what I am almost certain is a westbound freight on the one in thirty six gradient of Dainton bank.
There was a refuge siding at the foot of the bank at this eastern or down side used to hold freights awaiting clearance to the summit from Aller Junction, with a heavy tank engine ivariably waiting there ready to assist as seen here.
4176 will assist up through to the tunnel at the summit and then cross to the up line and come back bunker first to Newton Abbot or await another duty, whilst banking duties for freights heading eastwards were undertaken by these Newton Abbot tank engines assisting from Totnes on the equally demanding climb."
