5110 1960-05-14 Severn Tunnel Junction

GWR 51XX class 2-6-2T Np 5110 pilots 9F 2-10-0 No 92000 for the passage through the Severn Tunnel with up up coal train soon after leaving Severn Tunnel Junction in May 14, 1960. After having been held in the loop this working has now been given a clear road.

Peter Kerslake says "Just five of Mr. Churchward's original "3100" series of heavy tank engines were rebuilt by him in 1906 with larger 2000 gallon water tanks and bigger boilers, their increased tractive effort permitting them to be used as seen here on piloting and banking duties through the Severn Tunnel between Severn Tunnel Junction and Patchway at the northern outskirts of Bristol.
They formed part of the "3150" series which eventually totalled 41 in number and the former 3110, now 5110 is helping the first Standard "9F" 92000 out on the main line down to the tunnel with a substantial looking freight, bearing Target Number "T3", carried in order to assist signalmen in identifying its duties."
