1369 1961 Weymouth

1369 1961 Weymouth

One wonders how realistic the 'Keep 50ft Clear' sign was. The visitors at the Jersey Cafe seem unmoved by the scene.

Happily now preserved and working the South Devon Railway heritage line between Buckfastleigh and Totnes , 1369 is shown here following transfer from its initial home at Swindon shed to Weymouth in April of 1960 , the engine receiving the boiler from sister engine 1370 , withdrawn early in 1960 , and thereby having the distinction of being the sole member of the class to have a new boiler during its working lifetime.
The bell was fitted prior to transfer to Weymouth , initially being situated on the front bufferbeam , but later moved to the position seen here just ahead of the cab , its purpose being to warn pedestrians in the narrow Weymouth streets to and from the quay of the approaching locomotive and train , the fireman being required to ring the bell continuously whilst on the move .
Two shunters had to accompany every such working , one , the "shunter in charge " walking ahead of each train and being equipped with a whistle , lamp and warning flags !
