Tenbury Wells Station, with ex-Great Western Diesel railcar
View westward, towards Woofferton; ex-GWR Kidderminster - Woofferton line. No. 27 is one of the 1940 batch of Associated Equipment Co. (AEC) railcars first introduced in 1934: they proved very useful on the GWR for local services but were not to be perpetuated in Britain as railway passenger vehicles of general use for another 20 years.
Peter Kerslake says "Former G.W.R. Railcar No.27 was one of the series built at Swindon Works from 1937 following three years of experience with the earlier two designs that were bodied respectively by the Park Royal and the Gloucester Railway and Carriage Companies.
The revised design consisted of twenty railcars with the final versions designed and intended for working in pairs with a standard seventy foot coach sandwiched between them, and these Swindon built units were more austere in appearance than the earlier versions, having sharply designed wedge ends as seen here, a marked contrast to the more pleasing rounded ends of the two earlier designs."
