W16W 1950s Oxford
Alongside Oxford coal ramp.
Peter Kerslake says "Railcar W16W looks in fine condition in this image from the 1950's with a sister unit behind, this design having bodywork constructed by the Gloucester Railway and Carriage Company at their Bristol Road works in Gloiucester during 1935 and 1936.
Fitted with two A.E.C. power units their handsome streamlined appearance mirrored that of the earliest members of the class which had bodywork from Park Royal and my 1956 shedbook shows that number 16 was allocated to Reading M.P.D. in 1956 in company with four others of the class, with three being here at Oxford although Worcester had the most with six on its books.
The covers over the bogies fitted when new have long since been removed to ease maintenance on the running gear but the railcar still makes an attractive picture."
