W36W 1953-06 Bristol

GWR diesel railcar No W36W leads a special for AEC from Weston-super-Mare into Bristol Temple Meads during June 1953.

Peter Kerslake says "Railcars W35W and W36W running into Bristol Temple Meads with Bath Road shed in the background and the younsters, as usual, making use of a couple of trucks on the platform, the Railcar displaying its "A.E.C." crest confirming its power units and running gear had been built by that Company at its Southall Works, where virtually all London Transport's omnibuses had been built.
Built in 1942 these later versions were designed to work in pairs, and as seen here, with a standard 70 foot coach coupled between them.
Whilst allocated to Bristol St. Philip's Marsh Depot during this period of time both these units were rostered to duties on the Avonmouth, Portishead and Weston super Mare lines but sadly both these two Railcars were destroyed by fire on 10th April 1957 at St. Anne's Park east of Bristol whilst on a service between Temple Meads and Bath."
