W21W 1963-10-06 Swindon Works
A sad , but nevertheless interesting picture of former G.W.R. Railcar W21W . following withdrawal displaying that dreaded ' Cond. ' ( for condemned ) which so often appeared on anything and everything in later years. Showing its sharp and wedge shaped ends , and not being one of the class with the more rounded and smoothed variants , W21W would have been built at Swindon in 1940 during the early War years in a programme which saw the power units and transmissions coming from A.E.C. at Southall , the chassis ( on the later members of the class ) and bodywork being built at Swindon . There were many variants in design in the class which finally totalled thirty eight , and sister engine W22W happily remains with us today having been saved from being cut up at Barry , it now being at Didcot with the Great Western Society.
