W25W 1953-03 Birmingham Snow Hill
Although most of the Dudley local services were steam worked up until 1957, there had for many years been two scheduled daily trains which were operated by Stourbridge based former Great Western Railway diesel railcars and these continued to work until the late 1950s. No.W25W is pictured in March 1953 after arrival at Platform 7 towing a GWR suburban brake coach to augment the passenger capacity. The later railcars with standard drawgear lasted longer than the earlier examples, No.W25W remaining in service until August 1962. My 1956 shedbook shows that W25W was allocated to Bristol St. Philip's Marsh (82B) in that year so although Stourbridge Junction (84F) certainly had W8W , W14W and W29W on their books in 1956 perhaps this one was moved to Bristol between 1953 and 1956 for some reason. The many variants of the Railcars were to be found throughout the Western Region during their working lives , with 35 of the class still at work in 1956 and allocated to Motive Power Depots ranging from Southall and Reading in the East to Carmarthen and Cardiff's two Depots in Wales whilst Gloucester , Oxford and Worcester ( which had the most at six ) also had them on their respective complements. W25W has the conventional style of buffers with the sharply edged wedge shaped ends , unlike the more rounded and more attractive design of some of her sisters. Powered by twin A.E.C. Diesels producing a total of 210 h.p. , less than than the 242 h.p. of earlier designs , this example had 48 seats and had been built in the Wartime year of 1942 in company with a batch comprising W19W to W32W
