W4W 1962 Old Oak Common

W4W 1962 Old Oak Common

I am not an expert on these Railcars and had not realised that W4W seen here had been preserved , but if this is a 1962 image as shown she looks to have been restored into her former Great Western splendour , making a splendid sight and perhaps someone knows the story behind this . W4W was a very early member of the class , built in 1934 and incorporating both buffet and toilet facilities which limited its capacity to 44 seats , and was used on fast and very popular express passenger duties between Cardiff and Birmingham . Still in service in 1956 this Railcar was the sole representative of the 35 units remaining in service in 1956 to be allocated to Newport Pill ( 86B ) , although three others were to be found at other Welsh Depots , namely Landore , Cardiff Canton and Carmarthen , all with a single member at each. Further research tells me that this restoration was for the appearance of this Railcar at Swindon Works for the naming ceremony of 92220 ' Evening Star ' , but why was this carried out on this Railcar , it's now part of the National Collection and in 2017 you can see it at 'Steam' Museum, Swindon.
