An unusual 1950s view of York 'Old' Station. It was opened by the York & North Midland Railway in 1841 by the simple expedient of making a whacking great hole in York's medieval walls - who'd allow THAT today? The station was was a terminus, short-sightedly requiring through trains from London and Newcastle to reverse out of the terminus station to continue their journey! Latterly used as a parcels depot, carriage siding and occasional railway exhibition venue, this important part of York's history has been disgracefully completely obliterated by modern office developments. In happier times, an ex-NER Worsdell 'J71' or 'J72' was shunting the yard.
