61032 1960 Darlington

Ex-LNER Thompson 'B1' class 4-6-0 No. 61032 'Stembok'. Built at Darlington in August 1947 as LNER No. 1032 and withdrawn in November 1966.

Edward Thompson's 'B1s' were probably his finest design. I have always thought that the obscure names of African antelopes was hopelessly misguided. It must have caused some puzzled head-scratching amongst the traveling public! Random locomotives in the class were also named after equally obscure LNER directors, perhaps only Oliver Bury as the GNR General Manager from 1912 and LNER director until 1945 merited such attention! Enough of my critique, here's 'Stembok' in 1960 with Darlington Station (and power station) seen in the distance.
