GNR 1 1952-10-11 Doncaster
Great Northern Railway Stirling 'Single' class 4-2-2 No.1. Built at Doncaster in 1870, withdrawn in 1907 and preserved.
The famous Great Northern Railway 'Single' of 1870 was one of the earliest locomotives to be preserved. Both the LNER and British Railways recognised its publicity value and it has been brought out of retirement on many occasions over the intervening years. At Doncaster Station in October 1952 she is about to be coupled to 'C1' Atlantic 251. The pair were to attend the 'GNR Centenary Exhibition' (13th-18th October) at King's Cross, very appropriately hauled south by an ex-GNR Ivatt 'J6' 0-6-0. They were returned north by ex LNER Thompson 'B1' 61207 on 21st October.
