Peter Kerslake says "A dismal day as one of the Scottish B12s in its twilight year. After the Great Eastern Railway built 71 of the class an additional ten came from the works of Beyer Peacock. 61502 was one of the very earliest of the class introduced in around 1910 and classified by the Great Eastern Railway as S69s". Some of the Scottish series were rebuilt between 1943 to 1948 with new boilers and they lost their splendid valancing over the driving wheels, an atractive feature which enhanced their appearance going back to their Great Eastern days; the rebuilds were classed as B12/4s".
