M&CR 14 1919 Carlisle-
Maryport & Carlisle Railway H.Smellie 0-6-0 No. 14. Built at Maryport Works in October 1877 and withdrawn in September 1924. Photographs of Maryport & Carlisle Railway locomotives are very scarce and those of passenger trains 'out on the line' are rare as the proverbial 'hen's teeth'! This is Hugh Smellie designed M&C No.14 leaving Carlisle Citadel Station in 1919 with a very archaic collection of rolling stock. The M&C was one of the three most profitable railways in Britain, only the Taff Vale and Rhymney paid better dividends to their shareholders!
