GWR '4575’ 2-6-2T No.5510 on the 1 in 50 approaching Minffordd with the Up ‘Cambrian Coast Express’ on 18th May 1959. It had only arrived at Machynlleth the previous month from Swindon where it had been allocated since 1941; No. 5510 was withdrawn in February 1961. The five coaches from Pwllheli will join those from Aberystwyth at Dovey Junction for the journey to Paddington. Garth Quarry on the right was opened in 1870 with production focused on the extraction of dolerite which produces a high-specification aggregate used for road surfacing and railway ballast; it is still in operation today.
