GWR 45XX 2-6-2T No 4555 leaves Barmouth with a train for Pwllheli on May 14, 1951.
Peter Kerslake says "A fine image of 4555 passing Barmouth North signal box with the stock sidings and engine servicing facilities visible on the right together with the distinctive arched footbridge. There had been a 45 foot turntable on the right but it was removed before some of the unused sidings were also lifted in the early 1970s. There appears to be a large oil container of some sort riding on the running plate above the buffer beam in this view, not accidently I hope !
4555, a long standing resident of Machynlleth depot, following on from its time on the Cambrian was transferred to the West country becoming the locomotive rostered on the Dart Valley line's final freight working under British Railways in 1962. Upon withdrawal it was purchased directly from BR in 1965 and was the first preserved engine at Buckfastleigh on what then was the Dart Valley Railway.More recent times have taken 4555 up to the Torbay line, working from Paignton to Kingswear on the Dartmouth Steam Railway."
