Platform eight here at Plymouth's North Road station with Laira shed's 5541 at the head of a service to Launceston via Tavistock , this little member of Laira's allocation of Tank Engines being regularly rostered on this duty at this time before being withdrawn from Laira in July of 1962 .
5541 had enjoyed a varied life in service from emerging newly built from Swindon Works in August of 1928 , initially being kept at Swindon at its local Depot before moving to Bristol's Bath Road .
By far 5541's major role in service , however , was during its twenty years from 1945 or thereabouts when working the Cambrian lines from the important Depot at Machynlleth from where it was even entrusted to working the " Cambrian Coast Express " between Pwllheli and Dovey Junction before its move down to the Westcountry and Laira in January of 1960.
Saved from Barry scrap yard in 1972 little 5541 was restored at the Dean Forest Railway , returning to steam again three years later and still to be found at that same location today .
