5572 1962c Tavistock
Laira Depot's 5572 looks to be in good form here at Tavistock South , the Western Region's station at Tavistock , and she has come up from Plymouth via Marsh Mills and Yelverton , possibly terminating her service here or alternatively waiting to work forward to the branch terminus at Launceston .
This view is at the northern , or Launceston end of the station , looking southwards , with the substantial goods depot on the right from where agricultural goods , coal , animal feedstuffs and fertiliser were despatched .
Tavistock boasted two stations , with the Southern having one there as well on its line through from Plymouth to Okehampton , the Tavistock area probably seeing its busiest years during the last war when nearby based military personnel added to the already well patronised passenger services .
5572 happily made it into preservation , being a Westcountry engine for most of its life until being condemned in April of the year of this view , being saved at Barry by the Great Western Society in 1971.
