44897 1966 Birmingham Snow Hill

Stanier ‘Class 5’ No.44897 heads a fitted freight out of the south portal of Hockley No 1 tunnel past a DMU parked on the stub road which was in front of the old North signalbox. The factory of Taylor & Challen Ltd. which made industrial presses, appears in the background of many pictures taken at Snow Hill. It was built of red brick with superb decorative stone and brickwork accorded it Listed building status. The company's name was on a large panel of ceramic tiles in slightly scrolled Edwardian lettering which is still visible below the later signage. The Great Western ‘Toad’ brake van on the right and branded ‘COND’, seemed to be parked in the same spot for many years.
