BR Peppercorn 'A1' class 4-6-2 No. 60121 'Silurian'. Built at Doncaster in December 1948 and withdrawn in October 1965.

For many, many years this position, facing south outside the old NER locomotive works at York was home to a standby lovomotive. On this August day in 1963 it is the turn of 'Silurian' to be ready, prepared and able to take over in the event of a locomotive failure.
