This gloriously dramatic evening photograph really captures the 'sensurround' thrill of the steam era. LNER-built Raven 'B16/1' 4-6-0 No. 61446 is labouring hard with a mixed freight up the gradient at Monkton Moor between Ripon and Harrogate. Unusually for the time, this early 1950s photograph was taken on a plate glass negative. 61446 was built at Darlington in May 1923 as LNER No. 2375 and was withdrawn in Jan. 1961.
