53809 1957-09-12 Masbury

S&DJR 7F 2-8-0 No 53809 passes Masbury station with an up goods on September 12, 1957.

Peter Kerslake says "A splendid portrait of the last of Sir Henry Fowler's class "7F's", the eleven stalwarts of the Somerset and Dorset li from 1914 until 1964.
Seen here with a mixed freight the class handled a variety of freights ranging from coal from the Norton Hill colliery at Radstock to Mendip stone and a variety of agricultural produce as well as being the mainstay of passenger workings from and to Bath Green Park station, often working in double headed formation .
Following withdrawal 53809 spent eleven years exposed to the Welsh elements at Dai Woodham's at Barry before being rescued from the cutters' torches, making it into the preservation era and now housed at the West Somersret Railway".
