70002 70011 1956c Norwich

Peter Kerslake says "A rather nice shot taken by me at Norwich Thorpe station, probably in 1956 on a Saturday visit from Ipswich from where I was then working. 70011 Hotspur on the left is not as clean as 70002 Geoffrey Chaucer on the right and both are waiting to leave with one probably heading for Liverpool Street whist the other is probably on a North Norfolk Coast, or Cambridge working. The imposing roof top of Norwich Thorpe station shows well in my photograph, taken on what I recall as being possibly my only visit to Norwich when I was working at Ipswich and far from my Plymouth home in 1956. How I wish now that I had recorded on film more of the Britannias than I did, but those that were captured on my newly acquired Finetta 35 mm camera are now reminders of the fine work undertaken by the examples allocated to Norwich and Stratford until their exploits ended some five years or so later when Diesel power took over on their duties betwen Norfolk, the Essex Coast resorts and Liverpool Street. 70002 and 70011 were transferred from Norwich to March in June and September 1961 respectively but with no suitable work available at that depot the newly acquired Britannias went into storage before being saved from withdrawal by the wholesale transfer of all the class to the Midland Region from 1963 when essential overhauls at Crewe Works were immediately undertaken before they were put to work from a number of London Midland Region depots".
