Peter Kerslake say "Britannia on a Gorleston on Sea to Liverpool Street express with a Gresley teak brake composite leading the formation. I remember 70000 coming into Ipswich on a down working when from the platform I noticed that the drive rod to the mechanical lubricator on the driver's side was broken in half and was hanging down. The driver, I recall, wasn't particularly pleased or grateful when I pointed it out to him...I wished I hadn't bothered, I recall !
It wasn't until 2022 that the Great Eastern Society informed me that this was a returning "Holiday Express", the homeward working of one of the Saturdays only specials run from Liverpool Street to the popular holiday camp resort of Gorleston on Sea, located between Lowestoft and Yarmouth during the mid 'fifties.
This particular working is the 1:43p.m. from Gorleston to Liverpool Street, due in at 5:02 p.m. there being four outward specials and two returning ones on Summer Saturdays from the early 1950's to 1956.
