The Cornish side of the River Tamar makes for a pleasing background here as Western Dragoon heads up from Penzance and into Devon , photographed from the parkland adjacent to the new road bridge on the extreme right and beyond Mr. Brunel's masterpiece . Saltash station lies in mid picture beyond the end pier of the Royal Albert Bridge , and the little slipway which was in use in the days of the Saltash ferry and prior to the opening of the new road bridge can be seen at the water's edge on the far bank in front of the white painted houses below the bridge . Much smaller than its big brother down river at Torpoint the single ferry plied between Saltash and the Plymouth side of the river , but was very limited in the number of road vehicles it could take on board.
