Peter Kerslake says "Not the most favourable spot for our cameraman but he's captured three "Western" class locomotives under construction in the dark confines of Swindon Works "A" shop on the 24th. September of 1961.

Late delivery of the German built Maybach power units and the transmission equipment put production of the "Westerns" behind schedule but Swindon fell behind their northern counterparts at Crewe in any event with the result that five of the class due to be built at Swindon were constructed instead at Crewe, a final total of forty four being built at Crewe and just thirty at Swindon.
The last of the class built was D1029 "Western Legionnaire" which emerged from Swindon in January of 1964 and which was evaluated before entering service against a Brush Type Four at Derby in 1964."
