D1006 1965-11-27 Cheltenham St James
The flat windscreens on the Westerns did not clear water particularly well and a number of experiments were made to improve the situation, one of which was a clear rotating disc fitted in front of the driver, similar to that used on ships. This was called the Clear View Screen and used an electric motor to rotate the circular screen. The first was fitted to No.D1039 from March to December 1964, and a larger version was tried on No.D1006 Western Stalwart from November 1965 until early 1967. Although generally satisfactory in dealing with heavy rain, the restricted vision was felt to counteract any advantage gained. No.D1006 was photographed ready to depart from Cheltenham St.James on 27 November 1965 on what was described as the last steam-hauled service from Paddington with No.7029 Clun Castle taking the train to Bristol and then up to Gloucester where it handed over to the Western which worked only the short distance to Cheltenham and return, handing back to No.7029 for the next leg to Swindon before two English Electric Type 3s returned the special to London.
