Smoke from NER Q6 0-8-0 No 63455 obscures the new signal box (opened October 1960) at Pelaw as it comes off the line from Washington with at brakevan on 9 June 1967. The line to the right is the 'Leamside line' via Washington, the one straight on to Sunderland and Tyne Docks and the one curving off to the left is to Jarrow then South Shields.
