Peter Kerslake says "An attractive image of 82036 here at Pill on the Bristol to Portishead branch at the head of a "down" working from Temple Meads in 1962 and heading to the teminus at Portishead.
The line which dated back to 1867 had initially been built in order to provide a connection with the dock at Portishead which finally opened in 1879 with the rail network at Bristol but passenger services came to an end in September of 1964 despite Portishead's expanding population, the demise of its station partially attributed to its suffering severe subsidence problems.
Pill station seen here was situated centrally within the village which had a ferry service across the river Avon to Shirehampton on the Avonmouth line from Temple Meads enabling passengers to cross the river without heading into Bristol itself."
