Sitting on the afternoon school train to Machynlleth. Presumably the vans behind have nothing to do with the school train. Situated some thirteen miles west of Welshpool and with a population in excess of ten thousand souls Newtown was an important location on the Cambrian system , and the splendid building prominent in the background of this view is the Royal Welsh Warehouse with a closer picture showing it to have 1895 inscribed in the stonework at its top indicating that its construction was thirty six years after the first station was built here at Newtown. 82009 was one of the early Standard Class Three's to come to the Cambrian replacing the Dukedogs in the mid 'fifties , but the Standards suffered from having a limited water capacity which restricted their use to shorter and local duties before they were replaced by the larger Standard Class Fours with their increased water capacity .
