7824 1959-06-27 Hemerdon Bank

7824 1959-06-27 Hemerdon Bank

GWR Manor 4-6-0 No 7824 Iford Manor and King No 6002 King William IV with the Up Cornish Riviera, loading to thirteen coaches, near Hemerdon on 27 June 1959.

Peter Kerslake says "It's June 1959 but even for that busy time of year the up "Riviera" is very heavily loaded indeed , well over the ten coach maximum for an unassissted "King" over the South Devon banks, so 7824 is assisting the "King" just to Newton Abbot where at the outside of the station it will uncouple and run over to the shed, doubtless returning as pilot to a down working back to Laira later in the day.
This location, at the beginning of the woods, was my favourite location, gained by a long walk through the field shown, the whole area now covered by housing right up to the boundary fencing.
Both engines are doing well without the usual steam leaks from blown glands and the leading two coaches look newer than the remainder."
