7819 1964-04-06 near Aberystwyth

This is Wren Phillip Farm west of Bow Street, 78xx class 4-6-0 No 7819 'Hinton Manor' strides into Wern bank on a ruling gradient of 1 in 75, falling towards Bow Street with the 'down' 3.15 pm Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth service on April 6, 1964.

Peter Kerslake says "Although perhaps not being Collett's most succesful design, the thirty members of the "Manor" class found a new lease in life when following tests with 7818 "Granville Manor" in 1951 their steaming capabilities were improved and those which worked the Cambrian system did so with distinction.
7819 "Hinton Manor" was the last of the initial twenty to be constructed using wheels and motion from condemned "4300" class "Moguls". From new in February 1939 it was allocated to Carmarthen before moving to Oswestry four years later and then to Machynlleth and finally to Shrewsbury in January 1965 from where it was condemned in late 1965 but saved for preservation."
