67297 1954-04 Sunderland MPD

Ex-North Eastern Railway Worsdell 'O' (LNER 'G5') class 0-4-4 Tank No. 67297. Built at Darlington in June 1897 as NER No. 1919 and withdrawn in September 1958. Worsdell's G5s were a sturdy, economical design and had long careers. They could be seen throughout former NER territory on both branch line passenger trains and the heavier suburban trains. Speeds of 60mph were not unknown on their Middlesbrough to Newcastle workings. With a 'new build' project well underway, the lovely sight of a 'G5' like this of 67297 at Sunderland MPD in April 1954, could be revived within a few short years.
