I was curious as to the use of the two-storey building supporting Leeds Neville Hill MPD's large water tank. My lifelong friend, Tony Watson was a fireman at the depot. He recalled that the ground floor was storage for fire irons and other small parts and components. It also was used to house the smokebox-fitted nameboards for titled expresses working from Leeds City.
He regretted not asking the shed foreman if he could 'acquire' one or two! The sand furnace was originally on the outer corner of the running shed and is visible behind the water tower. When the running shed was cut back in the late 1950s (when Tony Watson was there), it became a stand-alone building.
In this 1930s view, ex-NER Worsdell 'O' (LNER 'G5') 0-4-4 Tank No. 1737 adds much to the scene. She was built at Darlington in Aug. 1896 as NER No. 1737 and withdrawn in May 1957 as BR No. 67273.
