Ex-Southern Railway Maunsell 'Lord Nelson' class 4-6-0 No. 30857 'Lord Howe'. Built at Eastleigh in Dec. 1928 as SR No. 857 and withdrawn in Sept. 1962. In this delightful view, there's a sense of the quiet orderliness of life in Britain in the early 1950s. We still had a King as monarch in July 1952 as immaculate 'Lord Howe' rolls into Southampton Central Station. The three cars on Western Esplanade would appear to need no yellow or white lines to keep order!
