58148 1962-05-06 Wellingborough

A long-lived 2F in the roundhouse. No.58148 was one of the last two survivors of the Midland Railway 2F 0-6-0 class when it was withdrawn along with No.58182 in January 1964. It had been allocated to Burton, in November 1955 but was transferred to Bushbury in April 1960 before moving to Coalville in March 1962 where it was photographed on 7th October 1962. The two 2Fs were replaced by BR Standard Moguls from December 1963 although even BR were not convinced they would fit Glenfield tunnel; No.78013 was taken on a gauging trial and to check clearances before modification and there was only half an inch between the cab eaves and the tunnel wall. Had the engine failed the crew would have been trapped!
