68314 1950s Gateshead
Built in batches between 1886 and 1895 the 87 engines which became LNER Class J71 were the standard NER shunters of late Victorian times. Their continued usefulness is shown by only 6 of them failing to enter BR ownership. The last survivors saw service into 1961. This photograph taken at its home shed in the 1950s is of a long standing Gateshead resident, No 68314. Built 1895; w/d May 1960.
