5024 1956-04-15 Newton Abbot
GWR Castle class 4-6-0 No 5024 Carew Castle at Newton Abbot shed on April 15, 1956.
Peter Kerslake says "Newton Abbot depot looked after its small allocation of Castles, keeping them in good external and mechanical condition with their use being shared with Old Oak Common on the "Torbay Express" and with Shrewsbury on the "West to North" rosters although they also worked up to Bristol on the "Devonian" on a regular basis. 5024 is at the location of a bombinig raid during the last war, with the station in the background. It is facing westwards with a well filled tender so is probably going to work a local down to Kingswear, be turned there and then run back through on a Paddington or northbound express working starting from Kingswear."
