5043 1940-05-05 Slough

GWR Castle No 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe passes Dolphin Junction, Slough on the slow (relief ?) line with an up express on 5th May 1940.

Peter Kerslake says "With the extensive flower and seed beds of Suttons Seeds in the background 5043 has just five coaches and a covered carriage truck. It acquired the name from "Dukedog" 3200 in 1937 having previously been named Barbury Castle when built in March 1936.
Saved from Woodhams Yards at Barry in August of 1973 following withdrawal from Cardiff East Dock M.P.D. in December 1963 the engine has been restored and is still with us today."
