7029 1964-04-24 Swindon

The spotter has climbed up for a good view while he writes in his notebook.

Gloucester Horton Road's 7029 , " Clun Castle " is seen here on Swindon Motive Power Depot on 24th . April , 1964 just a week or two before working the Plymouth to Bristol stage of the " End of Western Steam " enthusiasts' Special on the 9th . May of that same year when it reportedly attained a speed of 96 miles an hour descending Wellington bank into Taunton .
Despite its work stained paintwork 7029 still looks well cared for here , with her tender , cabside and number plates showing signs of some very recent and robust cleaning .
Called upon to work numerous Specials during its last two years in service , in addition to working local freight and passenger duties in and around Gloucester , 7029 's condition began to deteriorate and following the end of Western steam in December of 1965 the engine was saved for preservation , going to Tyseley from where it continued to work Specials far and wide but now privately owned .
All being well 7029 should be back on the main line again before too long following an extensive overhaul , again at Tyseley.
