5098 1957c Bristol Temple Meads
Bristol Temple Meads with Laira shed's 5098 Clifford Castle clearly fresh from Swindon Works and in new colours on a "Running-in" local service which was the custom for engines fresh from overhaul before they were returned to their home sheds.
Peter Kerslake says "Running In" duties for locomotives freshly outshopped from Swindon Works would have provided the fortunate railway photographers of the day with a wealth of "foreign" engines as they ran local stopping services on the relatively easy stretch between Swindon and here at Bristol Temple Meads.
The very first "Castle" built at Swindon following the end of wartime 5098 "Clifford Castle" entered service in May of 1946 and appears to have been allocated from new to Swansea's Landore depot and records show that she was still there in the late 'forties before moving to Plymouth's Laira depot.
One of Laira's finest she was a a favourite for the "Cornish Riviera" express working down to Penzance in addition to handling her fair share of passenger workings from Plymouth to Paddington, often taking the place of a "King" on the more lightly loaded rosters.
Later years took 5098 to the depots at Newton Abbot, Carmarthen, Llanelly, Old Oak Common and finally Reading from where she was withdrawn in June of 1964."
